„A Most Puzzling Case“: Crime and Criminality in East Germany – Dr Richard Millington
In 1981, a crossword puzzle found with the body of a murdered boy near Leipzig in East Germany led officers of the People’s Police to collect tens of thousands of handwriting samples to track down the killer. The policemen and women could not,
however, tell people why they were being asked for their handwriting, since the murder ran counter to the East German regime’s narrative that serious crime was the sole preserve of capitalist societies. In this talk, historian of East Germany Dr
Richard Millington discusses this case and more in an account of his research into crime and criminality behind the Berlin Wall.
Dr. Richard Millington ist Senior Lecturer an der Universität Chester. Er forscht und publiziert über die Geschichte Ostdeutschlands.
Der Eintritt ist frei, der Vortrag ist auf English und beginnt um 17:15 Uhr.
